Looking into a Mirror

I am also black-haired, gap-toothed, skinny in a bad way...
-Nicole Krauss

Reading this sentence, I immediately thought of myself. Although my hair is brown, and I haven't been gap toothed since third grade, I saw connections as soon as I read the passage. Millions are books are filled with millions of characters, a lot of whom we can not always relate to. It takes a good writer and a good reader, to find that one character who you can look up to.

Many people over look the characters in their books. They read the pages filled with hidden traits of the characters that make up the entire story. While these readers are understanding what is going on in the story they aren't understanding what is deep with-in the characters. Re-reading books, I learn things about the characters that are completely new to me. When we find a book that we are so passionate about, we pay attention to every little detail, even if it's the first time we are reading it. That is when we find those characters that mean so much to us, even after we finish the book.

Then, there are those books, where as soon as we pick it up, we notice things immediately. I think The History of Love is one of those books. I'm only 38 pages in, and I can really see myself in Alma. The journeys that characters go on can really teach us a lot! We just have to pay attention! And, even though it's "only a book" (which is SO not true) characters can mold us to be better people over all.

So, although it may take a while, I believe that everyone should find that one (or more) character that we can really relate to. Over all, it will make you a better reader (to help you notice detail in other books and possibly find more characters that you love), and even a better person!

  1. molly-pop,
totally! My favorite part about reading and writing stories is getting lost in the characters. I have read a number of books that I could relate to, and those happen to be the ones I enjoyed reading the most!

  2. I remember the good old days of ps372...how i miss them! but i really like how talked about something that seems so common that nobody bothers to write about it. i have seen myself in some of the characters in brilliant books that i have read and how people are really a little bit of everything, we are crazy in our own strange ways and we are amazing and awesome, etc...
    GOOD JOB GIRLY!!!!

  3. I agree with you because to me a book represents life, no matter what genre there is. There are always going to be those characters who say so much in different form of writing.

I like how you mentioned the book, but you didn't talk about it much. GOOD JOB!!!!
