Walkabout, the story of two kids who get lost in the Australian outback, explores a lot about the topic of death. While Mary and Peter are trying to navigate their way out of the desert, they meet a "bush boy" who is on his walkabout. Although this is a journey of manhood to be done alone, the bush boy decides to help Mary and Peter, but then realizes that he has done a terrible thing.
The bush boy knows that he has broken the traditions of his culture, and he accepts death with much terror. Numerous times in the book, it was explained the Aboriginal people are scared of death. they think it is the worst thing possible. But really, when you think about it, we face many more horrible things in our entire life time. Who really knows what happens after we die, but we shouldn't worry about that.
The fact is, is that we have a long time ahead of us. Instead of dreading times to come,we should just go with the flow. That will prevent a lot of problems. We want to make life the best it can be, and we have time to do that. Life is one incredibly exciting and adventurous journey. We will discover so many things that we will carry with us, no matter what.
Dying, I feel, isn't as scary as everyone makes it out to be. It's one moment, although important, that is over like that. The journey that leads up to that moment, is what is scary. Because, as we know, life is not over just like that. MAKE IT MEANINGFUL! Otherwise, that journey was for nothing!
So seriously....you're allowed to be naive once and a while. Just be happy and enjoy the moment! Don't worry about whats coming next. Don't worry about all the scary things that will come in what seems like a million years. Living in the NOW is so much less stressful.
So death and getting old is nothing to worry about. The bush boy may have a lot of smarts about how to live, but he got too caught up with death. It's really not something to be scared of, because after all, we've got a long journey ahead of us to get through first,
"Instead of dreading times to come,we should just go with the flow."
ReplyDeletethere are two sides to this. sure humans are fine and all. they have food, family, entertainment everything to make a person happy. But if a pig goes with the flow, then the happy humans will eat him a year after he is born. Yes i ea meat and yeas i have tried to stop but thats life. So all in all, i agree. I guess its all tough luck!
great post!
its funny how sam mentioned pigs because most humans dont want to die, but with animals in general, death can come in 1 month or in 5 years. They've dealt with it and so can we, Its normal for animals to die, so its normal for us to die too. Its the cycle of life.
ReplyDeleteAwesome job molly. I love how you wrote about your book but you elaborated on it and stuck with one topic.AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!
I think you are totally right. We shouldn't worry about death. We should just focus on the present. Death will come. So there's no use worrying about it.
ReplyDeletei have a similar idea about death, and how almost every bad thing in this world is worse than death. I'm not trying to be depressing, but death is in a way an end to sorrow. good post:)
ReplyDeleteBen, i completely agree with you. And seriously, i don't find that depressing, cause it's true!
